You hear stories on the news about people going through all kinds of stresses and tragedies and often wonder how you could help. This week’s podcast is about someone who went through her own struggles and then found a way to help others by using laughter and distraction.
My guest, Jody Barrett, explains during our Skype chat how life threw her some serious curve balls and what she used to brace herself and then hit a few home runs in the process. Getting through her own struggles helped her understand how others might be experiencing the same feelings of being unsure and helpless as she went through those dark periods.
As a listener, I think you will be inspired as she describes how she faced each challenge and what she was able to do while going through numerous hospital stays for close relatives and herself. Humor and the support of those around her helped develop the coping skills needed to not only keep going but also maintain a marriage and raise three children.
Using the coping skills she learned from all the medical challenges, Jody got the idea to develop “Seriously Funny Gowns”. The name says it all. When you are sitting in the hospital, the doctor’s office, or waiting to have some type of test, your mind goes to all kinds of thoughts. Seriously funny Gowns were designed to help patients see the humor in their situation by using icons that can help to distract and support, if only for a little while, from all the things going on around them.
Jody sees Seriously Funny Gowns as her means of giving back not only to people like herself, but also people in the military or first responders as they go through medical treatment. The gowns send a message of hope and fun that we all need during times of great stress.
