“Education is not the filing of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”
William Butler Yates
I look back on the time when I moved from Colorado to Florida and remember that sense of disorientation that went on for quite awhile until I finally found my footing. George Salley moved from Florida to Oklahoma with a very busy family and a dog, and in the midst of getting settled decided that was the time to write a book.
As I listened to him during our Skype chat, I was a little amazed that it actually took the observation of someone else to help him see that over half of his book was already written from a compiled group of exercises he had stored for years. He, on the other hand, had the mental image from his own reading experience of a Tom Clancy novel when a treatment manual was sitting right before him waiting to be finished. Once that seed was planted, I admired his persistence to make the time in a very busy schedule to format his book, and then push through to publish it.
Amazon’s Kindle program offered him a golden opportunity; however doors may open, but it is up to us to walk through them. George was very candid in admitting that when it came time to actually hit that “send button” he had numerous thoughts about being judged, the book not being good enough, or if this the right time to take that step into the unknown. I smile as I recall him saying “I thought for a moment and realized it was now or never and hit send!”
In going through Simple Groups For Seniors, despite the title’s focus on the elderly; I found a good number of exercises that could be used for any age group or even an individual to begin to tackle grief, choices, depression and a whole hosts of other topics. It provides a starting point for the conversation, which is what most of us are looking for in resolving an issue or at least beginning to discuss it.
I don’t think the Tom Clancy franchise needs to be concerned, but George is now on fire with new ideas for other books. Click the highlighted title above to find out more about his book on Amazon. He has his process in place and we can expect to hear more from him. Isn’t that what a well lived life all about? To hear George quite humorously describe his journey, listen through the podcast player, episode 002 or through the player link above.
