Untold articles have been written about women facing a glass ceiling, and to a great extent they do, but many women have also placed restrictions on their careers by not being willing to self promote.
In almost all areas of your working life, self promotion is critical for professional advancement. Why then would women persist in fearing to do it? This week’s podcast episode explores some of the myths that cause women to hold back from promoting themselves, and looks at the subtle messages they give themselves or receive from society.
The episode highlights the results of a recent university study that demonstrated how women self censor in the name of being modest, being “the good girl”, or feeling they will be seen as “pushy” if they mention their accomplishments. You’ll find out it is part of a herd mentality.
But all is not lost because you are provided with tools that will help you navigate the mine field of self promotion, using tools like learning to speak in the third person when writing about your accomplishments, using collective language that indirectly highlights you, in addition to understanding that not all mentors are good for your career advancement.
Once you have listened to the episode try connecting with groups like the Wage Project, that can help you by providing information and role playing to learn how to negotiate like a pro. You’ll thank me later…
